This expressive bronze sculpture by Ruth Brouwer depicts a seated elderly woman, her hands resting quietly in her lap, expressing a moment of stillness and contemplation. The coarse, layered texture of the bronze emphasizes both the vulnerability and the strength inherent in her posture. Although the design is partly abstract, her presence remains palpable through the careful modeling of posture and proportion.

The dark bronze softly catches the light, beautifully highlighting the depth of the layers and the subtle irregularities in the surface. The sculpture stands on a warm wooden base that creates a natural and gentle contrast with the robust metal, giving the piece a balanced appearance.

This understated portrait subtly combines tranquility, life experience, and human dignity. Thanks to its clear design language and compact, harmonious composition, it's a work of art that will look great in a variety of interiors and remain appealing for a long time.

About the artist: Ruth Brouwer

Ruth Brouwer (1930–2020)was a Belgian-Dutch sculptor known for her serene figurative bronzes that emphasize human connection and inner peace. Born in Antwerp, she later settled in the Netherlands, where she further developed her artistic career. Brouwer developed a recognizable style with soft lines, rounded volumes, and a restrained expression, giving her sculptures a calm and poetic quality. Her work often depicts female figures, mother-child relationships, and tranquil moments in which emotion is subtly and clearly depicted. She employed a soft modeling technique that allows light and shadow to beautifully play across the surface. Her warm, natural patinas enhance the timeless quality of her sculptures. In addition to human figures, Brouwer also created animal motifs in which the same softness and intuitive approach are evident. She is prized by collectors for her combination of elegant craftsmanship and emotional simplicity. Ruth Brouwer is considered an important representative of figurative sculpture in the Netherlands in the second half of the twentieth century.
