Signed on the back of the mirror. Damage to the hand/mirror; the mirror is loose and needs to be repaired.

This elegant bronze sculpture by Pieter Starreveld depicts a nude woman leaning slightly forward toward a small hand mirror, as if examining herself with curious gentleness. Her pose is playful and graceful, with subtle upward arm movements that give the sculpture a sense of liveliness and refined dynamism. The fine modeling of the body emphasizes her natural grace, while the flowing lines create a harmonious and timeless appearance.

The greenish patina enhances the depth of the bronze and gives the work a classical, slightly poetic feel. The marble base forms a stylish and stable foundation that beautifully supports the sculptural character of the piece.

Despite the slight damage to the hand and mirror, and the fact that the mirror is loose and requires restoration, it remains a charming and characterful work of art that softly depicts femininity, reflection, and elegance. A special piece for lovers of figurative art with a refined appearance.

About the artist: Pieter Starreveld

Pieter Starreveld (1911–1989)was a Dutch sculptor known for his broad expertise in bronze, glass, and medal art. Born in Koog aan de Zaan, he studied at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam, where he was shaped by the classical figurative tradition. Starreveld developed a naturalistic style with organic forms and a strong focus on posture and movement. He created portraits, animal figures, and monumental sculptures that exude a distinct, quiet strength. After World War II, he gained national recognition with memorials in cities throughout the Netherlands. His modeling is clear and fluid, giving his sculptures a timeless and harmonious appearance. The combination of technical mastery and sensitivity to human emotion makes his work enduringly beloved. Starreveld also worked as a medalist, demonstrating the same refinement and attention to detail. He founded his own bronze foundry in Amersfoort, where he worked for many years. His oeuvre is extensive and diverse and can be found in numerous public spaces and collections. Starreveld is considered one of the most important Dutch figurative sculptors of the twentieth century.
