About the artist: Jan Meefout
Jan Meefout (1915–1993) was a Dutch sculptor known for his powerful yet restrained formal language. His work is characterized by a combination of classical monumentality and modern simplicity. Meefout often worked in bronze and stone, expressing a strong sense of balance and harmony.
His sculptures often depict human figures and animals, emphasizing clean lines and a serene presence. Meefout uniquely combined movement and stillness, making his sculptures both vibrant and timeless.
After the Second World War, he gained fame with monumental commissions and public art. Several of his works can still be admired in Dutch cities and museums. They testify to an artistry rooted in tradition, yet always with a contemporary perspective.
Jan Meefout belongs to the generation of sculptors who helped shape post-war Dutch art. His work demonstrates how simplicity and power can coexist in sculpture, and how art can occupy a lasting place in the public domain.
